McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release (MSTR)

How can Scar Tissue effect us?

Scar Tissue forms when the skin is damaged and collagen is laid down in random patterns to form thick, fibrous tissue as part of the body’s healing process.  This healing process reaches its peak about 21 days later, but may continue for a year or more. Scar tissue may refer to a cut, wound, surgery, burn, acne scar or otherwise.

The effects of scar tissue may be both physiological and psychological. On a physical level there may be restrictions to range of movement, blood and lymph flow, circulation, energy and neural pathways. The psychological impact may change, with emotions such as fear, anger, resentment, worthlessness, loss and grief being implicated.

Physical symptoms that often present with scar tissue include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Itching
  • Nerve sensations / weird or odd sensations
  • Coldness
  • Referred pain or sensation
  • Restriction to movement
  • Restrictions to flexibility
  • Energy restrictions

MSTR work works on the physical and psychological impact of scar tissue.

What are the emotional impacts of Scar Tissue?

Where Scar Tissue typically refers to a trauma of the skin, there may be varying degrees of psychological trauma or emotion bound up within or accompanying it. A scar may have been caused by a traumatic event, such as a burn, gun shot wound, acid attack, difficult labour, mastectomy or otherwise, often leading the client to associate it with a negative emotion. Sometimes people may disassociate or choose not to think about or even touch their scars. Should the scar have been chosen, for example choosing to have breast implants, there may still be accompanying emotions from the time of the surgery and events before.

Scar Tissue Release works not only works on the physical impacts of scars, but recognises and allows for the release of traumatic emotions and feelings.

*Please note that MSTR work should not be used as a substitute for psychological therapy, but may work well alongside psychological work.

Psychological feelings that may present from scar tissue may include:

  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Distrust
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Resentment
  • Low self esteem
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of libido/sex drive
  • Self loathing / self image problems
  • Disconnection – Body and psychological
  • Shame
  • Uncontrollable laughter

It is also important to note that positive emotions may also be present or identified, including bravery, strength, relief and pride.

How can MSTR help me?

The special MSTR technique helps facilitate the release of the tight and densely bound collagen fibres that inhibit blood and lymph flow in and around the scar. This can have a positive impact on long term effects of scar tissue on the body and improve mood and wellbeing for the client. Sometimes what we assume is a muscle dysfunction causing our pain or discomfort, may also be the impact of a scar, so it always worth asking yourself what scars you may have (no matter how old the scar might be!)

By working on a multi-directional level, we can address the scar from all angles of fascia and adhesions. The combination of the rapid move and multi-directional technique can make this treatment truly effective and sometimes it can also be life changing!

What kind of Scars can be treated?

Scars must be at least 8 weeks old and fully sealed before they can be treated (without infection). The age of the scar does not matter apart from this minimum requirement. In many instances people may not be aware how an old scar from their childhood may still be affecting them.

MSTR can be performed on the following types of scars:

  • Surgeries
  • C-Sections
  • Acne Scars
  • Animal Bites
  • Stings
  • Implants
  • Burns
  • Acid
  • Gun Shot wounds
  • Stabbings

Please note that MSTR cannot be performed when the following are present:

  • Surgical Mesh
  • Infection / Contagious infection
  • Fragile Tissue (poorly healed, aging skin that may be broken)
  • Bruising / Swelling
  • Active Skin Conditions (eczema, rash, psoriasis)
  • Sunburn

If the type of scar you are presenting with is not on this list, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

What can I Expect from a MSTR Session?

To begin with I will complete a consultation with you regarding the physical feelings, sensations and the emotions you have around your scar. If you are happy to proceed, the treatment will take place on a couch or chair depending on which is most comfortable for you. The treatment is performed on skin – so access to this area is important, so please bear in mind when dressing before a session.

The treatment may last between 30-45 minutes, however usually 30 min is sufficient to cause a change. I advise having more than one session if possible for effectiveness, and offer a discount for a package of sessions.

Once the treatment is over we will explore how you are feeling physically and emotionally. As this treatment can bring up old memories and emotions, I will be there at all times and will not leave the room (such as in Bowen). I will hold a compassionate space for you to begin your healing journey.

How much does a MSTR Session Cost?

A 30 min consultation and treatment costs £30

I offer a package of x3 sessions for 10% off ~ or x6 sessions for 15% off the total amount. This encourages you to have the amount of treatments that will be most effective for healing and change.

The total amount including discount may be paid for up front, or the discount redeemed on the final payment.

Card or cash accepted
